Sex Counseling in Clinical Sexology

Our sexuality is an integral part of who we are. If you're exploring your sexuality or experiencing difficulties, you might be wondering whether you should talk to a professional to gain insights and support in navigating this aspect of your life. Many of us have grown up with conflicting messages around sexuality and our bodies. Many of those message are imbued with shame and even disgust. Knowledge is built on previous experiences, and even when you 'know better,' you might feel unable to let go of the sex-negative messages you've been exposed to.

Sometimes, just talking to someone about it helps. You know, that “when I hear myself saying it out loud…” feeling? But if that someone’s response is plagued by their own shame and sex-negative learning, it might just make things more complicated… Much of the time, it's all about getting comfortable with being uncomfortable, in a safe space. Sex counseling is a specialized form of counseling that focuses on assisting individuals and couples with a wide range of sexual concerns.

Sexuality is embodied, relational, and socially influenced. Sex does not happen in a vacuum. Sex counselors may address concerns such as sexual dysfunction, communication challenges, intimacy problems, sexual identity exploration, and coping with the impact of medical conditions on sexual well-being. Through learning from your sexual history, we will explore specific suggestions to address those concerns.

Self- and co-regulation is at the heart of my practice. Whether we’re working with stress at work, marital conflict, sexual difficulties, BDSM exploration, identity, or I’m your accountability partner… How do you manage your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors? Contextualize, contrast, and readjust the volume settings!

Note: Clinical Sexology is not a licensed specialization on its own. For more information, refer to our service agreement.
